A Mile in My shoes

exhibition overview

A Mile in My Shoes is an immersive installation from Empathy Museum that invites you to listen to the personal story of a stranger. Each story is paired with a real pair of shoes, worn by the person you’ll hear from.

The storytellers come from all walks of life. You might hear from a Syrian refugee, a neurosurgeon, a war veteran, or a sex worker. The stories are personal, specific, and deeply human. They explore love, loss, identity, hope, and resilience. Together, they ask us to consider what connects us across differences.

what you'll experience

  • Empathy in Action: Choose a pair of real shoes and walk a path while listening to the voice of the person who wore them. Each step brings you closer to someone else’s lived experience.

  • Intimate Audio Stories: Hear reflections from people across backgrounds and borders, including refugees, veterans, artists, and healthcare workers. Their stories are honest, specific, and unforgettable.

  • Everyday Humanity: Listen to moments shaped by love, grief, purpose, and perseverance. These are the stories we often pass by but rarely pause to hear.

  • Global Voices, Personal Truths: Experience the wide range of human stories that connect us through dignity, vulnerability, and shared emotion.

  • Designed for Reflection: This is a quiet space for listening. There are no screens or distractions. Just you, a pair of shoes, and a story worth walking for.
