Atlanta, GA – Kimberly Renee is creating a virtual, interactive art installation that recounts the harrowing story of the Chattahoochee Brick Company (CBC) and its legacy of forced labor. Before this project, Renee was the creator of Black in Time Tours, an immersive Black history app that helped to inspire her approach to memorializing CBC’s history. Utilizing a powerful digital and mixed-media experience, Renee aims to uplift the histories of those impacted through CBC’s decades-long practice of convict leasing. This fellowship provides an opportunity for Renee to highlight the first-hand accounts of forced laborers and the enduring impact of their work on Atlanta’s infrastructure, as well as document these stories for future generations, moving the needle forward in community-wide understanding of convict leasing in Georgia while creating an impactful and timely work of memorialization.
