Silent Gesture: A Book Talk and Conversation with Activist-Athlete, Tommie Smith

Amidst the cheers of happiness, 2 young athletes, recognized the need to stand in solidarity with those who were oppressed back in the United States. Today, 50 years later, you are cordially invited to hear from Dr. Tommie Smith, 1968 Olympian, as he sheds light on his life and the lasting impact of his defiant moment in his newest book Silent Gesture: The Autobiography of Tommie Smith.

After a welcoming reception, you are invited to participate in this community dialogue with Smith. Books will be available for sale and signing following the program.

A graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park, he has been a professional sports journalist for more than 30 years, for newspapers that include the Baltimore Sun, the San Francisco Chronicle, Newsday and the National Sports Daily. He has won writing awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors, the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association, the Chesapeake Associated Press, the California News Publishers Association, the Florida Sportswriters Association, the National Association of Black Journalists and the Society of Professional Journalists. In 2007 he co-authored Silent Gesture: The Autobiography of Tommie Smith, which was nominated for an NAACP Image Award.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]
