Atlanta, GA – Mourning Our Losses (MOL), a crowd-sourced memorial to honor the lives of those who die in prisons, jails, and immigration detention facilities in the United States, is working to bring its memorialization efforts to Atlanta. March 26 was the five-year anniversary of the death of Anthony Cheek – who was held in Lee State Prison in Georgia – the first incarcerated person in America known to have died from COVID-19. At this event, MOL aims to uplift the names and lives of all those who passed away in Georgia prisons in the past five years, with images of the memorialization event uploaded to the MOL digital archive as well as included in a memorial booklet. This fellowship provides an opportunity to fund these memorialization efforts, bringing to the community and loved ones of those impacted by the carceral system a tangible and impactful way to remember the lives of people killed by the carceral system in Georgia.
