The National Center for Civil and Human Rights works to create a more just and equitable society through dynamic and empathy-building experiences, teaching history’s connection to the present, and inspiring the change-maker in each of us. Each year, nearly 200,000 guests of all demographics enter The Center and leave with the knowledge necessary to create a more equal and just society.
In 2021, The Center launched an ambitious $53 million expansion campaign to add two new wings to our building and invest in our programs. Having raised more than $32 million so far (for capital and programs), we are excited to get construction underway with a groundbreaking ceremony.
WHEN: Friday, October 14, 2022 A light breakfast will be served at 9am with the groundbreaking ceremony following at 10 am.
WHERE: The National Center for Civil and Human Rights
Our physical expansion will add 20,000 square feet of space for public engagement and conversation, exhibitions, and education. The East Wing will be a one-story Innovation Lab – roughly 4,500 additional square feet of multifunctional space for classrooms, trainings, conferences, performances, events, and pre- and post-tour conversations. The multi-story West Wing will house a Family Gallery on the lobby level, café, gallery memorializing racial violence, and gallery space for traveling and special exhibitions.
Our program expansion includes: a DEI Experiences program for workplaces, a human rights training for law enforcement, and a national civil rights history education program.
