Atlanta, GA – Veronica Fuentes is working to uplift the lives and efforts of the young people involved in the Atlanta Student Movement during the Civil Rights Era, connecting their stories to the lasting scars and injustices of the Atlanta Prison Farm. Through the creation of a digital storytelling exhibit, Fuentes’ memorial will bring to light the images, names, stories, and documents of students and victims long buried in the archives—honoring the bravery of the Atlanta Student Movement while exposing the injustices of the Atlanta Prison Farm. This fellowship offers a meaningful opportunity to connect the Atlanta community to this history through interactive workshops, public events, and engagement with the exhibit itself, which will draw from Fuentes’ extensive archival research. Fuentes’ goal is to expand this history beyond the pages of history books and to spark dialogue and conversation about the legacies of oppression and the transformative power of peaceful protest, which is now more important than ever.
