Atlanta, GA – Juanes Zapata, the Program Manager for the Give Back Garden, is working to provide restorative mindfulness workshops to incarcerated people at the Metro Transitional Center. As a Colombian immigrant and member of the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee, Zapata hosts Saturday workshops – centered around a meal – to discuss agriculture, mindfulness and wellbeing, and nutrition and physical health. This fellowship provides Zapata the opportunity to expand the effectiveness of these workshops by bringing in yoga and sound bath sessions for the incarcerated people who attend these Saturday workshops so they can learn to bring yoga into their regular routines. Zapata will also collaborate with the participants to conduct round table and team interviews to uplift the experiences of these laborers, demonstrating how the legacy of convict leasing still exists in Georgia and how efforts like those of the Give Back Garden aim to instill restorative healing practices.
