SUMMARY:More Than A Dream
DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, the role of women heroes has been downplayed in the public narrative. Michael Long and Yohuru Williams challenge that narrative by putting women at the forefront with their book “More than a Dream.” Their book\, written for middle school-aged children\, tells an alternate history of the March on Washington that focuses on the stories of women who were instrumental to the movement. On October 29\, Long and Williams are coming to The Center to discuss the book and have a Q&A session for children. Before and after\, The Center will facilitate activities that complement the event.

DESCRIPTION:“Act Now: Responding to Discrimination in the Classroom and Next Steps” is a professional development opportunity for educators created to develop empathy and responsiveness to discrimination in the classroom and workplace. During this two-hour interactive program session\, participants will learn incident management skills while having an opportunity to practice implementing them. Participants will also be able to discuss and brainstorm bystander interventions and effective advocacy within their respective schools and communities. On October 20\, the program will run two times\, allowing participants to sign up for the morning or afternoon session. To attend\, please register by October 11. \nThe same workshop will be presented twice in the same day. There will be a morning session\, 9AM-11AM\, and an afternoon session\, 12PM-2PM. Food will be served 30 minutes before each session. You can register for either session through the link provided.

DESCRIPTION:Alma Mexicana Danza Folklorica is a Mexican dance troupe based in Lilburn\, GA. “Alma Mexicana” means soul\, and “Danza Folklorica” means folk dancing. Their performances give guests a feast for their eyes as they present traditional dances from Veracruz\, Chihuahua\, Michoacan\, Sinaloa\, Yucatan\, and other places in Mexico. Alma Mexicana Danza Folklorica teaches audiences the beauty and diversity of Mexican customs and culture through music and dance. Their performance is part of The Center’s offerings of activations to honor and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and takes place on October 14 at 11:30AM and again at 12:30PM on the 2nd-floor lobby. This program is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. \nMeet Panelist\, Rashidi Harper: \n \nRashidi Harper is an award-winning director and producer whose cultural impact spans across music\, film\, television\, and the digital space. With a trusted reputation among influential figures in popular culture\, Rashidi has collaborated with global brands\, iconic athletes\, respected actors and beloved musicians. The list includes household names from Apple & Nike to Venus & Serena Williams to Dr. Dre\, Snoop Dogg & Kendrick Lamar. \nNotable career highlights include his involvement in the executive team responsible for the brand identity and landmark launch of Apple Music as well as being the director and executive producer of FX’s critically acclaimed documentary series\, “Hip Hop Uncovered”.  Currently\, he is in post-production for “Headliners Only\,” the Netflix documentary starring Kevin Hart and Chris Rock. \n  \nMeet Panelist\, Nicka Sewell-Smith: \nNicka Sewell-Smith is a host\, consultant\, and documentarian with more than 20 years of experience as a genealogist. She has extensive experience in researching the enslaved and their communities\, is an expert in Mississippi Delta genealogy\, and currently serves as a senior story producer at Ancestry\, the global leader in family history and consumer genomics. \nNicka has diverse and varied experience in media with a background in audio\, video\, and written communications. She’s appeared on TODAY\, CNN\, MSNBC\, an Emmy winning episode of Who Do You Think You Are and has been interviewed by Oakland Tribune\, National Geographic\, and TIME. She is the host of BlackProGen LIVE\, an innovative web show with more than 130 episodes focused on people of color genealogy and family history. \nShe is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma\, a member of two lineage societies (Sons and Daughters of the Middle Passage (SDUSMP)\, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR))\, and a past board member of the California Genealogical Society (CGS) and the African American Genealogical Society of Northern California (AAGSNC). Nicka served as the chair of the Outreach and Education Committee for AAGSNC\, and is the former project manager for the Alameda County\, CA Youth Ancestral Project where more than 325 youth were taught the value of family history.

The conversation will explore their experiences growing up in the Civil Rights Movement\, how their families inspired them through their work and the continuing work they do today. A light reception will proceed the conversation. Sponsored by Gallagher. \nPanelists/Daughters \nAisha Withers Mitchell\, a Southern University A&M alumni and past employee of Amazon\, is currently the  Director of Human Resources for the Withers Collection Gallery and Museum. Aisha is a Los Angeles native and granddaughter of famed photographer Dr. Ernest C. Withers. \nAlthough raised in Los Angeles\, Aisha spent her summers working alongside her grandfather in the studio and accompanied him on numerous jobs. In those moments with her grandparents\, Aisha learned the importance of the images her grandfather captured throughout defining moments of history. \nThese moments have sparked a passion within her family to preserve their legacy and educate generations through Dr. Ernest C. Withers’s lens. As Dr. Withers always stated\,” Pictures Tell the Story.” \n  \nLisa S. McNair is the oldest living sister of Denise McNair\, one of the four girls killed in the infamous 1963 bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham\, Alabama. Denise was an only child at the time of her death. Almost exactly one year from the day she was murdered\, Lisa was born.  \nToday\, Lisa is a professional photographer with her own business\, Posh Photographers\, conducts Anti-Racism Workshops\, and is a national public speaker. Lisa shares the story of Denise’s life\, her heinous murder\, and how it affected her parents and the city of Birmingham. She also speaks on racial reconciliation\, urging audiences to remember that we have more commonalities than differences.    \nLisa hopes that we will never forget the lessons learned nor the lives lost during the Civil Rights Movement\, so we do not repeat the horrible evilness of that time.
