With a trusted reputation among influential figures in popular culture\, Rashidi has collaborated with global brands\, iconic athletes\, respected actors and beloved musicians. The list includes household names from Apple & Nike to Venus & Serena Williams to Dr. Dre\, Snoop Dogg & Kendrick Lamar. \nNotable career highlights include his involvement in the executive team responsible for the brand identity and landmark launch of Apple Music as well as being the director and executive producer of FX’s critically acclaimed documentary series\, “Hip Hop Uncovered”.  Currently\, he is in post-production for “Headliners Only\,” the Netflix documentary starring Kevin Hart and Chris Rock. \n  \nMeet Panelist\, Nicka Sewell-Smith: \nNicka Sewell-Smith is a host\, consultant\, and documentarian with more than 20 years of experience as a genealogist. She is the host of BlackProGen LIVE\, an innovative web show with more than 130 episodes focused on people of color genealogy and family history. \nShe is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma\, a member of two lineage societies (Sons and Daughters of the Middle Passage (SDUSMP)\, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR))\, and a past board member of the California Genealogical Society (CGS) and the African American Genealogical Society of Northern California (AAGSNC). Nicka served as the chair of the Outreach and Education Committee for AAGSNC\, and is the former project manager for the Alameda County\, CA Youth Ancestral Project where more than 325 youth were taught the value of family history.

The conversation will explore their experiences growing up in the Civil Rights Movement\, how their families inspired them through their work and the continuing work they do today. A light reception will proceed the conversation. Sponsored by Gallagher. \nPanelists/Daughters \nAisha Withers Mitchell\, a Southern University A&M alumni and past employee of Amazon\, is currently the  Director of Human Resources for the Withers Collection Gallery and Museum. Aisha is a Los Angeles native and granddaughter of famed photographer Dr. Ernest C. Withers. \nAlthough raised in Los Angeles\, Aisha spent her summers working alongside her grandfather in the studio and accompanied him on numerous jobs. In those moments with her grandparents\, Aisha learned the importance of the images her grandfather captured throughout defining moments of history. \nThese moments have sparked a passion within her family to preserve their legacy and educate generations through Dr. Ernest C. Withers’s lens. As Dr. Withers always stated\,” Pictures Tell the Story.” \n  \nLisa S. McNair is the oldest living sister of Denise McNair\, one of the four girls killed in the infamous 1963 bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham\, Alabama. Denise was an only child at the time of her death. Almost exactly one year from the day she was murdered\, Lisa was born.  \nToday\, Lisa is a professional photographer with her own business\, Posh Photographers\, conducts Anti-Racism Workshops\, and is a national public speaker. Lisa shares the story of Denise’s life\, her heinous murder\, and how it affected her parents and the city of Birmingham. She also speaks on racial reconciliation\, urging audiences to remember that we have more commonalities than differences.    \nLisa hopes that we will never forget the lessons learned nor the lives lost during the Civil Rights Movement\, so we do not repeat the horrible evilness of that time.

The podcast is hosted and based on a course taught by Emory Pulitzer Prize-winning professor and journalist Hank Klibanoff. Season 3 focused on the shooting of Ahmaud Arbery. Klibanoff will discuss the podcast’s Season 4 return to the civil rights era and examine the 1958 killing of James Brazier\, who worked three jobs to buy a new Chevrolet Impala for his family but died from a police beating and neglect from medical and legal authorities in Dawson\, Ga. DESCRIPTION:Join us at The National Center for Civil and Human Rights this spring for a 2-day workshop helping educators understand frameworks used to create impactful and empathy building learning experiences for students learning about slavery and American history. Both workshops will be held from 9am-3pm. \n  \nDay One: Teaching Hard History: American Slavery | February 1\, 2023  \n\nIn this interactive workshop\, educators will explore Learning for Justice’s Teaching Hard History: American Slavery framework.  They will connect their identity with their current practices around teaching enslavement\, then use their reflections to address gaps in their curriculum and instruction.  In addition\, they will also have the opportunity to reflect on the legacy of slavery influences their local community today.\nClick here to register for Day 1\n\n\nDay Two: Advocating for Teaching Honest History: What Educators Can Do | February 2\, 2023 \n\nThis workshop will begin by providing educators with an opportunity to connect to each other by listening and conversing  with other participants about their experience responding to pushback to teaching honest histories.  Then\, participants will learn about Learning for Justice’s resource on what we can do to advocate for honest history\, which includes learning about stories of success and identifying what tools have worked in those stories.  Finally\, participants will have the opportunity to create an action plan for advocacy in their community by drawing from the experiences of other participants and Learning for Justice’s research\, adding to a coalition of communities across the country.\n Click here to register for Day 2 \n\n\n
