SUMMARY:The Truth About Environmental Racism
DESCRIPTION:Environmental racism is the disproportionate burden of environmental hazards placed on people of color and low-income communities. Policies and practices have historically forced these communities to live close to mines\, sewage works\, power stations\, and landfills\, which often leads to adverse health effects and other challenges. \nJoin The Center for a panel discussion exploring the history of environmental racism and the fight for environmental justice through a truth and transformation lens. Our panel will also explore the relationship between climate change and environmental injustice and how citizens can join the fight for environmental justice.

SUMMARY:Understanding Climate Change as a Human Rights Issue
DESCRIPTION:For over 30 years\, communities\, governments and businesses around the world have struggled with climate change. Each year we witness increases in the Earth’s temperature\, the frequency of natural disasters\, the pollution of oceans\, and adverse health outcomes resulting from the climate crisis. These environmental threats highlight the urgent need to act now. \nEvidence shows a serious concern about climate change across multiple demographics. Although citizens and environmental justice advocates continue to speak out against climate injustices\, the influence of  business and politics outweigh the concerns of low-income communities\, who often experience the worst of the climate crisis’s impact. \nJoin The Center virtually on April 22nd at 12 PM to hear experts discuss the impact of the climate crisis on democracy\, and the simple steps you can take to join the fight to save our planet. \n\nKatherine Catalano (moderator) Deputy Director\, Center for Climate\, Health and Equity (APHA) \nDr. Jairo H. Garcia CEO of Urban Climate Nexus\, Researcher/Professor of Climate Policies and Sustainable Cities\, UN Habitat Regional Curator for North America\, and SDGs Educator Fellow \nAndrew A. Rosenberg Director of the Center for Science and Democracy at the Union of Concerned Scientists  \nLauren Herzer Risi Program Director\, Environmental Change and Security Program at The Wilson Center

SUMMARY:Women Fighting for the Right to Vote
DESCRIPTION:Throughout American history\, women have fought for the right to vote. Think about the role Stacey Abrams’ organization\, Fair Fight\, played in the 2020 election. That effort followed a significant tradition. Our program\, Women Fighting for the Right to Vote\, explores the actions women have taken in history and today to secure the right to vote—from the Civil Rights Movement on. This program will also cover actions women—and everyone—can take to increase turnout in 2022. \nJoin The Center for a conversation about the legacy of the women of the Civil Rights Movement and their influence on the organizations led by women whose work to register voters in Georgia changed the course of an election. \nPanelists: \n\nTamieka Atkins\, Executive Director of ProGeorgia\nHelen Butler\, CEO of People’s Agenda\nDr. Vicki L. Crawford\, Associate Professor of Africana Studies and Director of the Morehouse College Martin Luther King\, Jr. Collection.

SUMMARY:Engaging Youth Voters in Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Youth voters are poised to have a disproportionately high electoral impact in 2022—if campaigns and organizations invest in engaging them. Georgia is listed in the top 5 states to experience the highest youth impact in both the 2022 Senate and Gubernatorial elections. As organizations continue to educate young people on the electoral process\, Democracy Class stands out as a leader. It is a non-partisan curriculum that educates high school students about the importance and history and registers them to vote. Join The Center to learn about how the Democracy Class initiative is engaging youth voters through a partnership of school systems\, voting rights groups\, and sports and entertainment organizations in Atlanta. If you are interested in youth voter education\, please join us to learn how you can be involved in bringing Democracy Class into classrooms and community centers around the country.

SUMMARY:Truth and Transformation: Westside Atlanta
DESCRIPTION:Join The Center on Wednesday\, February 23 at 7pm for a discussion about the history of convict labor at two sites in Atlanta—Bellwood Quarry\, now the centerpiece of Westside Reservoir Park\, and the Chattahoochee Brick Company. \nConvict leasing was a practice government leaders and private businesses used after Emancipation to re-enslave Black men and women by falsely convicting them of crimes and sentencing them to labor. \nThe conversation will also explain the work that has been done to tell the full history of these places in our city—and create a memorial to those forced into convict labor. \nTo register for this program\, click here.

SUMMARY:Partner Program from Equitable Dinners and the Fulton County Remembrance Coalition (FCRC): Stories from the Soil Inspired by the Equal Justice Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Equitable Dinners Atlanta and the Fulton County Remembrance Coalition present Stories from the Soil\, a series of conversation dinner events remembering the lives of 36 documented victims of racial terror in Fulton County between 1889 – 1936. Stories from the Soil serves to create a narrative to counter that of white supremacy by identifying the humanity of the victims and the injustice imposed upon them. \nThe Fulton County Remembrance coalition has gathered the stories and collected the soil from approximated locations of the lynching or a location symbolic to the victim during healing ceremonies. \nThis year\, Equitable Dinners will use the arts to give voice to the lives of those still speaking from the earth.
