ABOUT THIS TEMPORARY EXHIBIT

COURAGE UNDER FIRE: THE 1961 BURNING OF THE FREEDOM RIDERS’ BUS

One of the most poignant examples of racism in transportation was the Freedom Rides. Courage Under Fire displays Joseph Postiglione’s photography which captured the violence that Freedom Riders experienced in Anniston, Alabama on May 14, 1961. The images made Alabama synonymous with violent resistance to desegregation during the course of the American Civil Rights Movement.

  • Courage Under Fire features 38 photographs that tell the story of the burning of the Freedom Rider’s Bus in 1961
  • The exhibit is on display at the Center for Civil and Human Rights from July 9 through September 3, 2017
  • The exhibition is on loan from the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
