[vc_row][vc_column][mk_fancy_title size=”24″ font_family=”none”]Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, invite you to an intimate conversation featuring the legendary Judith Jamison, Ailey Artistic Director Emerita, with CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield.[/mk_fancy_title][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1547066754612{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Celebrating the 60th anniversary of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the discussion will highlight the impact and reach of Alvin Ailey’s pioneering legacy, spotlight the groundbreaking career of Judith Jamison and preview plans for Ailey’s exciting Fox Theatre engagement Thursday, February 21st – Sunday, February 24th.

Prior to the talk, Center guests (who have purchased admission to The Center) will be able to observe a dance workshop for local students from 4:00 pm-5:15 pm, led by Ailey dancer and Georgia native Christopher Wilson. The talk is free and open to the public.

This is the fifth annual collaboration between Ailey and The Center, part of Destination Dance Ailey Atlanta celebrating Atlanta’s vibrant cultural community through partnerships between the Ailey organization and Atlanta-based cultural, civic and educational organizations.[/vc_column_text][mk_padding_divider][mk_custom_list]

  • Doors open at 6:00 PM and the event begins promptly at 6:30 PM

(commissioned for the 2002 Cultural Olympiad), Love Stories (with additional choreography by Robert Battle and Rennie Harris, 2004), and Among Us (Private Spaces: Public Places) (2009). Ms. Jamison’s autobiography, Dancing Spirit, was edited by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and published in 1993. In 2004, under Ms. Jamison’s artistic directorship, her idea of a permanent home for the Ailey company was realized and named after beloved chairman emerita Joan Weill. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a Primetime Emmy Award, a Kennedy Center Honor, a National Medal of Arts, inclusion in “The Time 100,” an honor from First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House, and most recently a BET Black Girl’s Rock Living Legend Award. Since joining CNN in 2002, she has reported from all over the world including the Persian Gulf region during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Beijing during the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, Washington, D.C. during the 2009 presidential inauguration, London at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games and in 2015 Selma, AL for the 50th Anniversary of “Bloody Sunday.” A former correspondent for NBC News, Whitfield has garnered multiple honors, including an Emmy award, Ebony Award, NAMD Communicator of the Year, the Howard University School of Communications Alumna of the year, the Alfred I. DuPont Award-winning team for CNN’s coverage of the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia, and the 2005 George Peabody award for the network’s live coverage of Hurricane Katrina and aftermath.
